Welsh darts star Gerwyn Price has stirred fresh controversy by claiming that he would have made light work of Team England had he competed in the latest edition of the Darts World Cup.
The former world champion, known for his fiery competitiveness and outspoken nature, suggested that England’s path to glory would have been far more difficult if he had been on the opposing side.
“Let’s be honest — if I was playing, beating England wouldn’t have been a struggle. It would have been an easy feat,” Price said in a post-tournament interview. “They’re a good side, no doubt, but I’ve beaten the best on my own plenty of times. Give me a partner who can hold their nerve, and England are going home early.”
His comments come after England lifted the World Cup trophy following a dominant campaign, brushing aside several higher-ranked nations along the way. Price, who did not participate in this year’s event due to prior scheduling commitments and personal reasons, watched from the sidelines as Wales exited in the quarter-finals without him.
Fans and pundits were quick to react. Former England international and current pundit Wayne Mardle described Price’s remarks as “typical Gezzy – entertaining but disrespectful to the players who actually turned up and delivered.”
Others pointed out that Price’s own World Cup record with Wales has yet to produce a title, despite his individual success in major PDC events. “Individual brilliance doesn’t always translate to the pairs format,” Mardle added. “England have depth, teamwork, and they got the job done.”
Price, however, remained defiant. “I’m not taking anything away from how they played. But if you want to know the truth, they’d have had a real problem if I was on that stage. Simple as that.”
England captain Michael Smith responded with a shrug: “Gezy says a lot of things. We’ve got the trophy. That’s all that matters.”
Whether Price will feature in the next World Cup remains unconfirmed, but his latest claim ensures that any future meeting between Wales and England will carry extra spice.
