Darts star Gerywn Price RETIRES from Darts after heartbreaking health admission

In a shock announcement that has sent ripples through the world of professional darts, former World Champion Gerwyn Price has declared an immediate and permanent retirement from the sport, citing a devastating personal health battle.

The 39-year-old Welshman, known for his fierce competitiveness and explosive walk-ons, broke down in tears during a hastily called press conference on Friday, revealing that he can no longer physically compete at the elite level due to a chronic nerve condition in his throwing arm.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to say,” Price said, his voice trembling. “Darts is my life. But I’ve been hiding the truth for months. The pain isn’t just discomfort anymore—it’s a thief. It has stolen my ability to grip the dart, to feel the tip, to even lift my arm without a stabbing nerve pain that leaves me breathless.”

Price revealed that he has been battling severe brachial plexus neuritis, a condition causing inflammation of the nerves leading from the spine to his right arm. While he attempted to manage the injury with cortisone injections and physiotherapy, a recent MRI scan showed irreversible nerve damage. Doctors warned him that continuing to play could lead to a permanent loss of function in his hand.

“I was told I could end up unable to hold my kids’ hands,” he whispered. “That was the moment I knew. Darts doesn’t matter more than that.”

‘The Iceman’ first rose to prominence by switching from professional rugby to darts, a transition many thought impossible. He silenced critics by winning the PDC World Championship in 2021, famously defeating Gary Anderson in a tense, dramatic final at Alexandra Palace. His career also boasted back-to-back Grand Slam of Darts titles and a record-breaking number of televised nine-dart finishes.

However, the 2026 season told a different story. Fans noticed a subdued Price—his trademark fist pumps replaced by visible flinches. He suffered early-round exits in six consecutive European Tour events, with his average dropping nearly ten points. Rumors of a “lost dressing room” and personal turmoil swirled, but Price admits he was simply too proud to admit the physical truth.

“People called me arrogant. They said I’d lost my bottle,” Price said. “But I was terrified. Every night I’d ice my arm until it was numb just to practice for an hour. The last match I played, I couldn’t release the dart. It just fell onto the oche.”

Fellow players rushed to offer tributes within minutes of the announcement. World No. 1 Luke Humphries posted on social media: “Gutted. We’ve lost a legend. The sport will be less exciting without ‘The Iceman.’ Health first, champ.” Michael van Gerwen called Price “the greatest competitor I ever faced,” while Gary Anderson offered an uncharacteristically emotional tribute: “We had our wars, but I take my hat off to him. He fought like a lion until his body broke.”

The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) confirmed that Price’s ranking will be frozen, and his official retirement ceremony will take place at the 2025 World Championship—a tournament he will now watch from a wheelchair-bound perspective as he begins intensive rehabilitation.

When asked if a comeback was possible, Price shook his head slowly.

“The Iceman is thawed,” he said. “This isn’t ‘goodbye for now.’ This is thank you, and goodbye. I gave darts everything I had. And now I have nothing left to give.”

Price plans to remain involved with the sport as a youth ambassador in Wales, focusing on preventing overuse injuries in young throwers. He walks away with 36 career PDC titles, over £4.2 million in prize money, and the legacy of a fighter who refused to go quietly—until his body finally called game, set, and match.
