Darts star Luke Littler considering RETIREMENT after prolonged online bullying

In a deeply troubling development for the world of darts, teenage sensation Luke Littler has revealed he is “seriously considering retirement” from professional darts, citing months of relentless online bullying and abuse that have taken a devastating toll on his mental health.

The 19-year-old former World Championship finalist, who burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old prodigy, broke his silence late last night in an emotional social media statement that has since sent shockwaves through the sport.

“I never thought I’d be writing this, but the last few months have broken me,” Littler wrote. “What was supposed to be the dream of a lifetime has turned into something I no longer recognize. The constant abuse, the lies, the threats – it’s not just ‘part of the job.’ I’m a human being.”

A Meteoric Rise Met with Malice

Littler captured the world’s imagination in 2024 when, at just 16, he stormed to the PDC World Darts Championship final, beating legends of the sport before narrowly falling to Luke Humphries. His remarkable talent, combined with his youthful composure, made him a household name overnight.

But with fame came a dark undercurrent. Littler’s management team confirmed that the teenager has been subjected to a coordinated campaign of online harassment, including death threats, doctored images, and vitriolic comments targeting not only his performances but also his appearance and family.

“After every match – win or lose – the abuse floods in,” Littler continued. “If I celebrate a win, I’m arrogant. If I lose, I’m a fraud who was ‘never that good.’ People forget I was a kid when this started. I’m still a kid.”

PDC and Fellow Stars Rally Support

The Professional Darts Corporation released a statement within hours of Littler’s announcement, expressing deep concern and vowing to take action.

“Luke Littler is one of the most remarkable talents this sport has ever seen, and more importantly, he is a young man of immense character,” said PDC President Barry Hearn. “We stand squarely behind him. The PDC will be engaging with social media platforms, law enforcement, and support services to identify and prosecute those responsible for this disgusting behavior. No player should ever feel that retirement is their only escape from abuse.”

Fellow darts stars, including world number one Luke Humphries and legendary figure Phil Taylor, have publicly reached out to Littler, urging him not to let bullies drive him from the sport he loves.

“Luke has a gift,” Humphries wrote on X. “Don’t let the cowards hiding behind keyboards take that away from you. We’ve got your back, mate.”

Mental Health in the Spotlight

Sports psychologists have warned that the pressure on young athletes in the social media age is reaching crisis levels. Dr. Emma Radcliffe, a clinical psychologist specializing in elite sports, told the BBC: “What Luke Littler is describing is a textbook case of cumulative trauma from online harassment. For a brain that is still developing – as his is – the relentless nature of this abuse can rewire stress responses to make competition feel life-threatening rather than enjoyable.”

Littler has not yet made a final decision, stating he will take “a few weeks away from the board and from social media” to assess his future.

A Wider Reckoning

The teenager’s statement concluded with a plea for change within the sport and beyond.

“I love darts. I always will. But I don’t know if I love what it’s become for me. If stepping away is what it takes to be happy again, then that’s what I’ll do. Please, think before you type. Your ‘joke’ might be someone’s breaking point.”

As the darts community holds its breath, fans have launched a #StayStrongLuke campaign on social media, trending worldwide within hours. Whether it will be enough to keep one of the sport’s brightest stars on the oche remains to be seen.
