Jonny Clayton has lit the fuse on the Premier League’s mid-season drama, firing a bold warning at teenage sensation Luke Littler: “If you want top spot, come and chase me.”
The Welshman, currently sitting second in the Premier League table — just one point behind the 19 year-old phenom — didn’t hold back in Thursday’s press conference ahead of Night 9 in Birmingham.
“Everyone’s talking about Luke — and rightly so, the kid’s box office,” Clayton said with a grin. “But pressure’s a funny thing. Let’s see if he can handle being the hunted instead of the hunter. I’ve been around long enough. He wants the league lead? He knows where to find me.”
Littler, who has taken the darts world by storm since his World Championship breakout, currently leads the eight-man elite field with few points. Clayton trails on 11 after a string of consistent performances, including a stunning 6-4 win over Michael van Gerwen last week.
The 49-year-old’s comments mark a notable shift in tone from the usual respectful rivalry. While Littler has brushed off most challenges with teenage nonchalance, Clayton’s psychological jab seems deliberately aimed at rattling the youngster’s composure.
“I’m not being disrespectful,” Clayton added. “But this is the Premier League. You don’t get given nothing. He’s won nights, fair play. But can he do it over 16 weeks when everyone’s raising their game just for him? Different story.”
Littler, when approached for a response, offered his trademark shrug: “Jonny’s a class act. If he wants a chase, I’ll bring my running shoes. But I’m not looking behind me — I’m looking at that trophy.”
The pair are scheduled to meet soon, a potential table-topping decider. With Van Gerwen lurking just two points behind in third, the battle for playoff positions is intensifying.
Former world champion John Part weighed in on the mind games: “Jonny’s trying to put a seed of doubt in a 19 year-old. Smart. But Luke doesn’t seem to feel pressure like normal humans. This could either backfire or be a masterstroke.”
