Darts star Gerwyn Price withdraws from Premier League for the rest of the season due to health reasons

In a shock announcement that has sent ripples through the world of professional darts, former World Champion Gerwyn Price has officially withdrawn from the 2026 Premier League Darts season with immediate effect, citing ongoing health concerns.

The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) confirmed the news early this morning, releasing a brief statement on behalf of ‘The Iceman’. Price, 40, has struggled for consistency throughout this year’s campaign and has reportedly been managing a recurring arm injury, compounded by mental exhaustion.

In a personal statement shared via social media, Price opened up about the toll the gruelling 17-week schedule has taken on his body and mind.

“This has been the hardest decision of my career, but I have to put my health first,” Price wrote. “For weeks I’ve been playing through discomfort and waking up exhausted. The travel, the pressure, the physical demand — it’s caught up with me. I am not withdrawing lightly, but I cannot perform at the level my fans and my team deserve.”

Price did not specify the exact nature of his condition but hinted at a lingering tendon issue in his throwing arm, alongside “complete burnout.” He confirmed he will step away from all competitive darts to undergo a full medical assessment and rehabilitation period, with a view to returning for the World Matchplay in July.

The Welshman’s withdrawal leaves a significant gap in the Premier League line-up with just four weeks remaining before the season finale at the O2 Arena on May 29. Price currently sits in 7th place on the league table, having won only three of his 14 matches.

PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter confirmed that no replacement will be brought in for the remainder of the league phase, meaning every opponent scheduled to face Price will receive a bye and two automatic points for those nights.

“Gerwyn’s health is the priority,” Porter said. “We fully support his decision. The remaining seven players will continue as planned, and the format will not change.”

Reaction from fellow players has been swift. World number one Luke Humphries posted: “Health comes first, Gezzy. Take all the time you need. The stage will be waiting.”

Michael van Gerwen added: “The Premier League is a beast. It breaks you if you’re not 100%. Wishing him a fast recovery.”

Price’s withdrawal marks the first mid-season exit from the Premier League since Gary Anderson stepped down in 2021 due to personal reasons. It also raises fresh questions about the punishing nature of the modern darts calendar, with several top players having voiced concerns over player welfare in recent months.

For now, Price said he plans to return to his family farm in Wales to rest. “I’ll be back throwing arrows when The Iceman feels cold again, not broken,” he promised.

The Premier League continues on Thursday in Birmingham, with Price’s scheduled opponent, Nathan Aspinall, awarded a 6–0 walkover.
