Wales Gerwyn Price explains with evidence why he pulled out of Darts 2026 World Cup

Former world champion releases damning dossier of officiating errors, claims tournament is “rigged against honest competitors”

CARDIFF, WALES — In a stunning and explosive intervention just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup of Darts, Wales’ former world champion Gerwyn Price has sensationally claimed that tournament referees are “corrupt” — and has produced what he calls “irrefutable evidence” to justify his abrupt withdrawal from the event in Frankfurt.

Price, 41, was due to lead Wales’ title defence alongside Jonny Clayton at the Eissporthalle from June 11-14. However, his name was conspicuously absent when the PDC confirmed this week that Wales would be competing without him. Now, in a series of social media posts and a 20-minute video statement, Price has broken his silence.

“I’ve bitten my tongue for years, but no more,” Price said, addressing the camera from his home practice room. “The referees are corrupt. Not incompetent — corrupt. There’s a difference. I’ve got the evidence. That’s why I’m not going to Frankfurt.”

Price then displayed a series of documents and match footage clips, which he claims prove a systematic pattern of officiating bias against him and other “aggressive, passionate players” since 2023.

The ‘whispered warning’

Among his key pieces of evidence, Price highlighted a previously unreported incident during the 2025 Grand Slam of Darts. He produced an audio recording — which he said was made by a fan in the crowd — of a referee allegedly whispering to an opponent: “Don’t worry, I’ll keep him quiet.”

Price claimed that same referee, whom he declined to name for legal reasons, had twice warned him for “celebrating too loudly” while ignoring similar behaviour from his opponent.

“Show me where in the rulebook it says you can’t fist-pump after a 180,” Price demanded. “Go on. I’ll wait. They make it up as they go along to suit the players they like. The Lukes [Humphries and Littler] can dance a jig on stage. I clench my fist and I get a letter from the DRA [Darts Regulation Authority].”

Statistical ‘proof’

Price also presented a statistical breakdown covering his last 50 televised matches. According to his data, he received “warning or sanction” from referees 27 times — compared to an average of just 4.5 times for the top 10 players ranked behind him.

One slide, titled “The Humphries Exception”, showed that world No 2 Luke Humphries had not received a single official warning for slow play, on-stage conduct, or verbal outbursts in 2025. Price labelled it “untouchable privilege”.

“I’m not stupid. I know I’m loud. I know I wear my heart on my sleeve,” Price continued. “But when the same referees smile at Luke Littler while he’s doing kick-ups with a darts shaft on stage, and then fine me £3,000 for tapping my own head? That’s not impartiality. That’s corruption.”

PDC responds

The PDC issued a brief statement late on Tuesday: “We have received Gerwyn Price’s correspondence. The allegations are categorically denied. Officiating at all PDC events is fair, transparent, and subject to regular independent review. We wish Wales well in the World Cup and regret that Gerwyn has chosen not to participate.”

Price was unimpressed. “Of course they deny it. What else are they going to say? ‘Sorry, lads, we got caught’?”

Wales and Scotland changes

Price’s withdrawal means Wales will now be represented by Jonny Clayton alone? — no, under World Cup rules, Wales must still field two players. The PDC confirmed late on Wednesday that veteran competitor Richie Burnett, 58, has been drafted in as a late replacement. A Wales spokesman said: “We respect Gerwyn’s decision but do not share his view of the referees.”

Meanwhile, Scotland will also have a changed line-up, with Peter Wright — himself no stranger to referee run-ins — replaced by Cameron Menzies. The colourful Menzies, 33, will partner Gary Anderson.

Menzies joked when asked about Price’s claims: “I’ve had a few warnings myself. But corrupt? Gerwyn’s a mate, but I think frustration’s talking there. You can’t call them corrupt just because they keep telling you to pull your shirt down.”

What next for Price?

Price ended his video with a warning to the PDC. “I’ve got 12 more clips. I’ve got timestamped emails from referees contradicting their own decisions. I’ve got a whistleblower inside the officials’ room ready to speak. If they think I’m finished, they’ve got another thing coming.”

He confirmed he will not watch the World Cup of Darts live on Sky Sports between June 11-14. “Why would I? So I can watch the same referees high-five Luke Humphries after he wins? No chance.”

As of Wednesday evening, the PDC had not announced any investigation into Price’s claims. However, sources suggest the governing body is “deeply concerned” about the potential fallout — not least because Price has promised to release his full dossier should England’s Littler or Humphries lift the trophy in Frankfurt.

“If either of the Lukes wins,” Price said, “I’m going live on YouTube with everything. Names. Dates. Bank details if I have to. The fans deserve the truth.”

The World Cup of Darts runs June 11-14, live on Sky Sports. Wales, without Price, will now face an uphill battle to retain their title.
