Darts pundit and former world semi-finalist Wayne Mardle has issued a stark warning to women’s world champion Beau Greaves, claiming the weight of expectation on the 21-year-old is “building faster than anyone outside her camp realises.”
Greaves, who has dominated the women’s circuit with an unprecedented run of tournament wins since 2022, is widely regarded as the most naturally gifted female player ever to pick up a set of darts. But Mardle, speaking on One80 TV, said her historic rise — including the decision to bypass certain BDO/WDF events and pursue PDC opportunities — has created a “relentless spotlight” that could prove difficult to manage.
“Beau has revolutionised the women’s game, no question,” Mardle said. “But here’s the warning — the pressure is mounting fast. Every time she steps up, people expect a 100-plus average. They expect her to whitewash the field. That’s not sustainable for anyone, let alone a 21-year-old.”
The warning comes after Greaves’s recent early exit in the PDC Women’s Series, where she lost to a player ranked outside the world’s top 20. While still comfortably the world No. 1 on the women’s circuit, Mardle noted that social media reaction was unusually critical — a sign, he believes, of how high the bar has been raised.
“She’s become a victim of her own brilliance,” Mardle continued. “A year ago, a quarter-final loss was fine. Now, people question if she’s ‘off form’. That’s a heavy mental load. And with talk of her maybe taking a PDC Tour Card one day, the noise will only get louder.”
Greaves herself has remained calm in public, recently describing the pressure as “part of the job.” But Mardle urged those around her to protect her from burnout — and for fans to adjust their expectations.
“She’s not a robot. She’s a young woman rewriting history. But history comes with consequences. My worry? That the flame burns too bright, too fast. I just hope she’s got the right people keeping her grounded — because from the outside, that pressure gauge is climbing every single week.”
The PDC Women’s Series resumes next month, with all eyes once again on Greaves. Whether she thrives or staggers under the mounting weight, Mardle’s words will be ringing in her ears — and everyone else’s.
