Jimmy Thelin will regret missing Aberdeen chance and must make this his New Year focus
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

For Jimmy Thelin at Aberdeen, it has to be more about immediate solutions rather than resolutions at the start of 2026.

The Dons aren’t where they want to be, and there needs to be a big improvement. The minimum expectation is a return to European football.

The Scottish Cup holders aren’t that far away from there, although one point from the last nine has seen them slip out of the top six. The next week is big, away to Falkirk and home and away against Rangers.

They need to put points on the board and not let those in front get any further away. It hasn’t been helped by the fact that one of their rivals, Hearts, currently sits top of the Premiership.

Kevin Nisbet

It has been a season when Celtic and Rangers have been the poorest they have been together in years. There is a genuine opportunity there, on current form, for the traditional Scottish duopoly to be broken.

Aberdeen will see this as an opportunity that has been missed. The other issue for Thelin is Motherwell.

They have come from nowhere under Jens Berthel Askou and are sitting fourth in the league, playing a brand of football that is arguably the best in the league.

The Dane came in this summer and implemented a clear and exciting style of play, while Thelin is now more than 18 months in, and he still hasn’t got a settled style or formation that has shown signs of getting consistent results.

It is clear that elements of the Red Army are now doubting whether or not the Swede can take their club where they want to go.

You only have to look at social media to see that backing for the manager really is starting to wane. Yes, I know that can’t be taken as a true barometer of the overall feeling.

It is an echo chamber, and often it is the people who shout the loudest who are heard. Thelin has been a master of keeping the Aberdeen fans onside.

The support have shown great patience and continued to back their manager and players. It does help when you deliver the first Scottish Cup in 35 years.

There have been times, particularly this season, where they have been short-changed in certain performances. The problem for Thelin is that he has had three transfer windows, and now we are going into a fourth.

He has been backed more than any other manager in the club’s history. Thelin, in his time at Aberdeen, has signed good players. They are all mainly good and technical, but they have all been too alike, apart from his late moves for Stuart Armstrong and Kevin Nisbet.

They need more physicality, power and strength in the squad to cope with the demands of Scottish football.

Thelin has acknowledged that recently, at the end of their Conference League campaign. If he can find that, then you could well see some of his other signings starting to shine more.

The key is getting that balance, and it has to come from outside because it isn’t currently in their squad. Thelin spent most of last season with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

It didn’t really see his side hit the heights, and a change to three at the back proved to be the masterstroke that saw them sink Celtic in the Scottish Cup final.

He returned to four at the back at the start of the season, but his new-look team couldn’t buy a goal or a win.

Thelin probably went against his principles and went back to a three-man defence. That provided a platform for improved results and got Aberdeen back into the top six.

Kevin Nisbet

The problem in recent games is that his team and players have reverted to their old failings. They have plenty of possession but don’t really hurt teams enough. The setup at the top end just doesn’t look right.

The central striker is left isolated and doesn’t get a lot of service, while the attacking midfielders and wingers aren’t really making the impact that is expected.

Aberdeen get into good areas, but at times there is a reluctance to just swing a ball into the box and let a player go and attack it.

At the other end, they are being left vulnerable to losing goals on the counter-attack and are losing soft goals from individual errors.

The issue for Thelin is pretty much in both boxes. They aren’t decisive enough in either.

Set plays are a big thing in modern-day football, but Aberdeen are getting very little from that front either.

Thelin has been reluctant to go with two strikers, but why not? What has he got to lose?

Nisbet, Marko Lazetic and Kusini Yengi all look like they could play better in two. The former Elfsborg manager has set out his plan for going forward. He wants to play four at the back.

Thelin believes if he can bring in two central defenders, then that would allow him to change his current formation. That in turn would give his team more of a balance to be more of a threat at the top end. He has to get it right.

Patience amongst the Aberdeen support is starting to wear thin.

Three-year plans are all well and good, but there need to be signs of progress and hope for everybody connected with Aberdeen to buy into.

To prove that Thelin can be the man to deliver further success.

🔥⚽ : EL CLÁSICO — THE STORY BEHIND FOOTBALL’S GREATEST RIVALRY! 🔵🔴⚪

HOW DID BARCELONA VS REAL MADRID BECOME ONE OF THE BIGGEST RIVALRIES IN WORLD FOOTBALL? 🤔🔥

Imagine a football match where millions of fans stop what they’re doing, social media explodes, friends become enemies for 90 minutes, and every goal becomes a memory that lasts for generations.

Welcome to EL CLÁSICO! 🏟️🔥

But this legendary rivalry didn’t start with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, or even the Champions League.

Its story began more than a century ago!

📜 1902: THE BEGINNING OF A LEGEND

FC Barcelona was founded in 1899, while Real Madrid’s history began in 1902.

On May 13, 1902, the two clubs met for the first time in a competitive match during the Copa de la Coronación tournament in Madrid.

Barcelona won 3–1.

Little did anyone know that this meeting would become the beginning of one of football’s most famous rivalries. ⚔️

🏆 1929: THE BATTLE ENTERS LA LIGA

When Spain’s La Liga began in 1929, the rivalry gained a new stage.

Real Madrid won the first league meeting 2–1, but Barcelona won the return fixture 1–0 and went on to claim the inaugural league title.

From that point, every meeting carried greater significance.

It was no longer just about winning a football match. It was about pride, bragging rights, trophies, and proving which club could dominate Spanish football.

🔥 THE 1950s: THE ALFREDO DI STÉFANO DRAMA

One of the most controversial chapters in El Clásico history involved Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Both clubs were interested in securing his services, and the complicated transfer dispute became a major talking point in Spanish football.

Di Stéfano ultimately became a Real Madrid legend, helping the club establish itself as a dominant force in European football.

His performances intensified the rivalry and helped shape the battles that followed.

💥 1974: JOHAN CRUYFF SHOCKS REAL MADRID

In February 1974, Barcelona travelled to the Santiago Bernabéu and defeated Real Madrid 5–0.

Johan Cruyff led a Barcelona side that produced a memorable performance away from home.

For Barcelona fans, it became a historic moment.

For Madrid supporters, it was a painful reminder of how quickly football fortunes can change.

But El Clásico always offers another chapter!

😱 THE 1990s: FIVE GOALS, TWICE!

In 1994, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5–0, with Romário delivering a memorable performance.

Real Madrid responded in 1995 by winning 5–0 against Barcelona.

Imagine beating your greatest rival by five goals, only to suffer the same humiliation the following year!

That’s El Clásico: one team’s greatest celebration can become the other team’s motivation for revenge.

👑 2000s: THE ERA OF GALÁCTICOS AND SUPERSTARS

The rivalry entered another exciting period as the clubs assembled teams filled with world-class talent.

Real Madrid had its Galácticos, featuring stars such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazário, and David Beckham.

Barcelona developed its own extraordinary generation, with Ronaldinho becoming one of the game’s most entertaining players.

In November 2005, Ronaldinho scored twice in Barcelona’s 3–0 victory at the Bernabéu.

His performance was so impressive that even sections of the rival crowd stood up to applaud him.

That’s football greatness! 👏🔥

🐐 2009–2018: MESSI VS RONALDO

Then came an era that football fans will never forget.

Lionel Messi represented Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo represented Real Madrid.

Two of the greatest players in football history competed during a period when the rivalry reached extraordinary global attention.

Messi produced magical dribbles, goals, and unforgettable celebrations.

Ronaldo responded with powerful strikes, incredible athleticism, and his own collection of decisive performances.

Every El Clásico became another opportunity for fans to compare two footballing giants.

And in April 2017, Messi scored a dramatic late winner in Barcelona’s 3–2 victory at the Bernabéu before holding up his shirt in front of the home crowd.

An iconic moment. An unforgettable image. A memory that still lives in football history! 🐐🔥

🌍 WHY IS EL CLÁSICO SO MUCH BIGGER THAN FOOTBALL?

The rivalry represents more than 90 minutes of football.

Barcelona is closely associated with Catalan identity and the slogan Més que un club, meaning “More than a club.”

Real Madrid represents the Spanish capital and has built a powerful identity through domestic success and European achievements.

Spain’s political history, particularly during the Franco era, added further symbolism and tension to the relationship between the clubs. However, the rivalry also grew through sporting competition, controversial transfers, legendary players, trophies, and decades of unforgettable matches.

Today, El Clásico is a global sporting spectacle watched by fans across continents.

And the story is still being written! ⚽🌍
