“If the PDC doesn’t sanction Littler, they were in on it” Darts star Raymond Van Barneveld on Littler’s cheating allegations at the Players Championship Games

In an explosive interview that has sent shockwaves through the world of professional darts, five-time world champion Raymond Van Barneveld has accused teenage sensation Luke Littler of cheating during the recent Players Championship Games. The Dutch legend has gone a step further than mere accusation, declaring that if the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) fails to sanction the 19-year-old, it would effectively mean the organization was complicit in the alleged misconduct.

Van Barneveld, 58, did not hold back as he detailed what he claims to have witnessed during the controversial matches. The allegations, which surfaced late last week, have divided the darts community and threaten to overshadow what has otherwise been a remarkable season for the sport’s fastest-rising star.

“I’ve been in this game for over three decades. I know when something isn’t right,” Van Barneveld told reporters. “What I saw at the Players Championship—the way certain things unfolded—it defies explanation unless foul play was involved. And here’s my message to the PDC: If you don’t sanction Littler, you were in on it. Simple as that.”

The Dutchman, known affectionately to fans as “Barney,” stopped short of specifying the exact nature of the alleged cheating, though sources close to the situation suggest it may involve irregularities with Littler’s darts or scoring discrepancies. Van Barneveld has reportedly filed a formal complaint with the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA), calling for a full investigation.

A History of Tension

This latest outburst is far from the first sign of friction between the two players. While Littler has frequently named Van Barneveld as his childhood idol, their relationship has been notably strained over the past two years.

The tension first came to light following the 2024 PDC World Championship, where Littler defeated his hero 4-1. In the aftermath, Van Barneveld allegedly claimed the teenager had ignored multiple congratulatory text messages. At the time, the Dutchman was quoted as saying he was “a bit done” with Littler—a remark that was widely misinterpreted as containing an obscenity.

Van Barneveld later set the record straight, explaining that he had simply told a journalist to “leave it” after becoming frustrated with Littler’s lack of response. “I never said f*** off, never ever,” he insisted at the time. The incident, however, left a mark on their relationship.

Since then, the two have had limited interaction on the tour. Van Barneveld, who reversed his retirement decision in 2021 and continues to compete at the highest level, has watched as Littler has ascended to the very top of the sport. The teenager is now a two-time reigning world champion and the world number one.

The Players Championship Context

The timing of Van Barneveld’s allegations is notable. Littler has notably opted to skip all four Players Championship events so far in the 2026 season, choosing instead to prioritize his Premier League campaign. This absence has raised eyebrows among some commentators, though Littler’s camp has maintained that the decision is purely strategic—a matter of managing his schedule and conserving energy for televised majors.

The Players Championship events, while not televised, are critical ranking tournaments on the PDC Pro Tour. They are often where less-heralded players make their names and where established stars grind out crucial ranking points.

It remains unclear precisely which Players Championship matches Van Barneveld is referencing in his accusations. Neither the PDC nor Littler’s representatives have issued a formal response to the allegations at the time of publication.

Reactions from the Darts World

Unsurprisingly, Van Barneveld’s comments have generated intense debate across the sport.

Former world champion John Part, now a commentator, urged caution. “These are extraordinarily serious allegations. Raymond is a respected figure in the game, but he’s going to need to provide evidence. You can’t just throw something like this out there without backing it up.”

Others have pointed to Van Barneveld’s own complicated history with controversy. The Dutchman was involved in a very public hotel tryst in 2019 while still married to his first wife, though his personal life has since stabilized following his marriage to Julia Evans in 2023.

Michael van Gerwen, Littler’s chief rival on the oche and a player who has himself weathered scandal—including a 2015 sexting controversy—declined to comment directly on the allegations, telling reporters only that “the PDC will handle it appropriately”.

What Happens Now?

The ball now lies firmly in the PDC’s court. The Darts Regulation Authority, which operates independently of the PDC to enforce disciplinary codes, has the power to launch investigations, levy fines, issue suspensions, or even ban players entirely from the sport.

Recent DRA actions have included lengthy bans for match-fixing offenses—Leighton Bennett received an eight-year suspension in 2024, while Andy Jenkins and Prakash Jiwa were banned for a decade each. The DRA does not treat integrity violations lightly.

If the DRA determines that Van Barneveld’s allegations are without merit, the Dutchman could himself face sanctions for bringing the game into disrepute. The disciplinary list maintained by the World Darts Federation includes numerous players penalized for “behavior bringing the sport of darts into disrepute”.

For now, Littler continues his pursuit of a historic season. The 19-year-old has already won the World Masters in 2026 and sits atop the Premier League table. He needs only the European Championship to complete darts’ career “Grand Slam” of major titles.

Whether he will have to answer formal questions about Van Barneveld’s allegations before achieving that goal remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: the simmering tension between darts’ past and its present has now erupted into a full-blown crisis—and the sport may never be quite the same.

The PDC has been contacted for comment.
