Steve Kerr nearly retired before the Golden State Warriors’ dramatic Play-In win over the Los Angeles Clippers changed his mind and led him to sign a new two-year contract.
Steve Kerr will return for another season with the Golden State Warriors, though the outcome could have been very different.
According to Wright Thompson of ESPN, Kerr had privately decided to retire the day before the Warriors’ Play-In game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
However, he chose not to inform the team immediately, wanting to handle the situation properly and avoid leaks, while still feeling some uncertainty about the decision.
Everything changed after the Warriors rallied for a dramatic 126-121 victory over the Clippers.
Kerr later told Thompson that he considered it one of the best wins of his coaching career, and privately admitted afterward that he was no longer planning to step away.
Following the season, Kerr met with Warriors ownership and reflected on whether he was still the right person to lead the team. He ultimately signed a new two-year contract to remain the franchise’s head coach.
Kerr has coached the Warriors since 2014 and has led the organization to four NBA championships.
