Newcastle United have dropped out of the fight to acquire Aaron Ramsdale this summer, instead focusing on Burnley’s James Trafford. According to The Athletic, with no European football, Newcastle has decided to pursue a backup goalkeeper rather than someone to directly compete with Nick Pope. As a result, Newcastle’s interest in Ramsdale has been superseded by their pursuit of Burnley’s James Trafford. The Daily Mail reported in late May that Ramsdale was on Newcastle’s list of targets, but the quoted asking price was thought to be too expensive. According to Arsenal correspondents in the media, Ramsdale is anticipated to relocate over the next few months. It was thought to be a question of when he leaves.
However, Arsenal will demand a high fee, which will be more difficult to obtain now that Newcastle is out of the race. Ramsdale made 11 appearances in 2023/24, but lost his starting spot to on-loan David Raya. Raya is scheduled to join permanently from Brentford whenever the window opens. Ramsdale is currently practicing for Euro 2024 with England, where he is likely to play a backup role to starter goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
