For Jimmy Thelin at Aberdeen, it has to be more about immediate solutions rather than resolutions at the start of 2026.
The Dons aren’t where they want to be, and there needs to be a big improvement. The minimum expectation is a return to European football.
The Scottish Cup holders aren’t that far away from there, although one point from the last nine has seen them slip out of the top six. The next week is big, away to Falkirk and home and away against Rangers.
They need to put points on the board and not let those in front get any further away. It hasn’t been helped by the fact that one of their rivals, Hearts, currently sits top of the Premiership.

It has been a season when Celtic and Rangers have been the poorest they have been together in years. There is a genuine opportunity there, on current form, for the traditional Scottish duopoly to be broken.
Aberdeen will see this as an opportunity that has been missed. The other issue for Thelin is Motherwell.
They have come from nowhere under Jens Berthel Askou and are sitting fourth in the league, playing a brand of football that is arguably the best in the league.
The Dane came in this summer and implemented a clear and exciting style of play, while Thelin is now more than 18 months in, and he still hasn’t got a settled style or formation that has shown signs of getting consistent results.
