With Blake Snell gone, the San Francisco Giants rotation won’t be as good the next season.
Although it was a smart move to add Justin Verlander, adding the Year-round carries a lot of risk. Last season, Verlander struggled with injuries and had his poorest performance to date. But the Giants appear to have faith that he will figure things out, and that may not be a bad thing. If healthy, Verlander, one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history, could have a significant influence for San Francisco.
A veteran who could come in and devour innings would be ideal, but the Giants could still use another arm. Marcus Stroman is one of several alternatives on the trade and free agency market. Though they haven’t been successful yet, the New York Yankees have been trying to move him. His 2025 salary of $18 million might be the cause of that. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman claims that the Yankees are prepared to eat a portion of his salary, though. “The Yankees are prepared to reduce Marcus Stroman’s $18 million salary and are still attempting to deal him. The Yankees would have more money to spend on an infielder if they could cut costs there, but don’t anticipate Nolan Arenado or Alex Bregman though don’t expect Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado.” Even if the Giants are unable to provide New York with an infielder in a trade, the Yankees would have more money to spend on trades or free agency. Stroman has changed over the years. He has pitched more than 136 2/3 innings in each of the last four years, despite having a 4.31 ERA in the previous year. He might be inexpensive if New York is prepared to eat his money, as Heyman stated, and at worst, he could be a good depth option for San Francisco.
