Following the Braves’ 9-0 loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday, in which Spencer Schwellenbach appeared overmatched, giving up six earned runs in 4.1 innings, it was reasonable to question whether the youngster would return to AAA to gain some more experience before his next start with the Braves. However, this does not appear to be the case. There was no move after the game to provide the Braves an extra arm in the bullpen, and Justin Toscano effectively confirmed that Spencer Schwellenbach will make his next planned start against the Orioles on Tuesday.
I have no objections to the Braves making this move. They don’t have a fifth starter to rely on right now, and Schwellenbach is arguably their best option. Unless they wanted to give Hurston Waldrep a chance to make his major-league debut, I don’t mind the 2023 first-round pick receiving some more time in Gwinnett before they pull the trigger. It will most certainly happen this season, but for now, it appears that Spencer Schwellenbach will get another chance against a talented Orioles offense.
