Congratulations to Danielle Green, a Purple Heart recipient, Iraq War veteran, and former Notre Dame women’s basketball player, who won the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs. Green is currently employed in South Bend as a counselor for veterans.

Danielle Green, a Purple Heart recipient, Iraq War veteran, and former Notre Dame women’s basketball player, recently earned one of the highest honors in the world of sports and service—the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs. Green’s recognition is a testament to her resilience, courage, and dedication, not only to her country but also to her community, making her an inspiring role model for countless individuals. This prestigious award, named after Pat Tillman, the former NFL player who gave up his professional football career to serve in the military and tragically lost his life in Afghanistan, celebrates the spirit of selfless service and sacrifice. Green’s life and career embody those values in every way.

Green’s journey is a remarkable story of overcoming adversity and giving back to others. She is perhaps best known for her time at the University of Notre Dame, where she was a standout on the women’s basketball team. A defensive force on the court, Green was known for her toughness and determination, qualities that would serve her well in her life after basketball. As a member of the Fighting Irish, Green not only excelled on the basketball court but also exemplified the kind of leadership and work ethic that made her a role model to her teammates and fans alike. She was a part of one of the most successful periods in Notre Dame women’s basketball, a program that has consistently been one of the best in the nation.

However, Green’s path took a turn when, after graduation, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, determined to continue her journey of service to her country. Her decision to join the military was motivated by a desire to make a difference in the world, and she chose to serve in Iraq during the height of the war. This decision would prove to be life-changing. In 2004, while serving in Iraq, Green was injured by a grenade during a combat mission, which led to the loss of her left hand. For many, this would have been a moment of despair, but for Green, it marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life—one defined by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Her heroic actions in the face of such adversity were an embodiment of strength. Rather than letting her injury define her, Green used it as motivation to continue pushing forward. Her recovery was long and difficult, but she never lost sight of her goals, both personal and professional. Green’s strength became even more apparent in the way she used her story to inspire others, demonstrating that challenges can be overcome with persistence, determination, and an unbreakable spirit. This resilience and courage are what made her a perfect candidate for the Pat Tillman Award for Service, which honors those who have demonstrated remarkable service to their communities, their country, and others.

Today, Green is employed in South Bend, where she works as a counselor for veterans, helping them navigate the challenges of reintegrating into civilian life. Her position allows her to give back to those who, like herself, have served in the military and faced the difficulties of returning home after a deployment. Green’s counseling work provides veterans with the support they need to heal, adjust, and move forward after their service. In many ways, her current role feels like a natural extension of her life’s work—serving others in a meaningful and impactful way.

In her role as a counselor, Green is able to share her experiences and wisdom with veterans who may be facing similar challenges. Having endured physical and emotional struggles of her own, she is uniquely equipped to understand and empathize with those she serves. Her work is more than just a job; it is a continuation of her lifelong mission to help others. She inspires others with her story, showing them that life can still be full of purpose, joy, and achievement, even after facing significant hardship. Through her counseling work, Green is making a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals, helping them find hope and direction as they transition to civilian life.

Winning the Pat Tillman Award at the ESPYs further solidified Green’s place as a trailblazer and an inspiration to others. The award recognizes individuals who, through their service, have made an extraordinary impact on their communities and the world. Green’s work as a counselor, her leadership in the military, and her dedication to inspiring others through her own journey all contributed to this prestigious honor. Her win also highlighted the continued importance of recognizing the contributions of women in the military and the power of sports figures to influence change both on and off the field.

Green’s story resonates not only with veterans but also with anyone who has ever faced a significant challenge. She has shown that no matter the obstacles, it is possible to rise above them and lead a life of service and purpose. Her recognition at the ESPYs is not just a reflection of her personal accomplishments but also a tribute to the strength of all those who serve in the military and work to help others in their communities.

In conclusion, Danielle Green’s receipt of the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs is a well-deserved recognition of her incredible resilience, her service to her country, and her ongoing efforts to help others. From her time as a Notre Dame basketball player to her service in Iraq and her current work as a counselor for veterans, Green has proven herself to be a true leader and an inspiration. Her life story is one of bravery, determination, and selflessness, and her work continues to inspire and uplift those around her. Green is a true example of what it means to serve others, and her legacy will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the lives she touches.
