Former PDC World Champion Rob Cross has broken ranks with the sport’s growing chorus of praise for teenage sensation Luke Littler, warning in a candid interview that the 19-year-old is being dangerously overhyped and could burn out before fulfilling his potential.
Cross, who famously defeated Phil Taylor to win the 2018 World Championship, offered five specific reasons for his skepticism, arguing that the current frenzy surrounding Littler mirrors past cases of premature coronation in darts.
“He’s a fantastic talent, no question. But let’s be realistic—he’s played one good World Championship run,” Cross said. “I’ve seen this movie before. The hype train is moving faster than his development.”
Here are the five reasons Cross believes Littler may not last:
- The ‘Second Season’ Slump
Cross pointed to the unrelenting pressure of a full PDC tour schedule. “Everyone has now studied his game for months. The element of surprise is gone. The real test is when you lose three first-round matches in a row on the floor. How does he react? We don’t know yet.” - Physical and Mental Fatigue
Despite Littler’s young age, Cross argued that teenage prodigies often crash hardest. “Darts is 90% mental. At 19, your brain isn’t fully wired for the grind—hotels, travel, social media abuse, expectations. He’s a kid. Kids break.” - Over-reliance on Power Scoring
“He throws big numbers, yes. But what happens when the 180s dry up on a bad night?” Cross asked. “The greats—Taylor, van Gerwen, myself on a good day—have a Plan B. I haven’t seen Littler win ugly yet.” - Commercial Distractions
Cross noted that sponsors and media obligations are already mounting. “He’s doing interviews, ads, appearances. That’s fine. But it eats practice time and focus. I’ve seen talented players drown in the off-board circus.” - The ‘Next Big Thing’ Curse
Finally, Cross cited historical precedent. “Remember Jelle Klaasen? Kirk Shepherd? Even early Michael Smith before he figured it out. The hype machine ruins more players than it makes. Littler might be different, but odds say he won’t dominate for a decade.”
Littler, who rose to fame after reaching the 2024 PDC World Championship final at age 16, has yet to respond directly to Cross’s comments. However, the teenager recently told reporters he is “ignoring the noise” and focusing on qualifying for next month’s Premier League Darts.
Reaction from fans has been divided. Many accused Cross of “jealousy” and “gatekeeping” on social media, while others praised his “honest reality check.”
PDC veteran and commentator Wayne Mardle offered a measured response: “Rob raises fair points about longevity. But Luke’s composure so far suggests he might be the exception. Time will tell.”
Cross, currently ranked outside the world’s top 10, insisted he is not trying to tear Littler down—only to pump the brakes on unrealistic expectations.
“I hope he proves me wrong,” Cross said. “But right now, the hype is writing checks his career hasn’t cashed yet.”
